When an ear infection drags on that long, we end up getting the antibiotics anyway...because, you know, secondary infection may be causing the ear pain. But it is quite miserable, regardless. Medical literature I read recently suggested that ear infections should clear up in a day or two. Ha!

Best of luck - hope your Botany is ear infection free shortly!

I read an article recently that some research is back on the antibiotics bandwagon for younger kids ... infuriating because I thought we all finally agreed not to give them? But she's been sick so long, if it were me I'd probably just give the prescription and hope for the best. Hang innthere!

Little trick I was told about by a parent with more experience than me - When the child is basically fine but might need some meds during the day, give them a dose before you drop them off, and then add a dose to something appropriate that you are positive they will eat for lunch - applesauce, yogurt, chocolate pudding. Seems a bit dishonest, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do !

Good luck

UK docs are under a lot of pressure not to overprescribe antibiotics so if they gave them to you, crack them open and use them before they expire. It sounds like it isn't shifting on its own. Hope she (and you) are back to full health soon.

Oh dear, I'm sorry. I forget how old Botany is, but Carla Hinkle's right that at least with the "younger" kids here in the US there seems to be some sense that symptoms (of ear infections) = antibiotics, because their ear tubes, so I'm told, are too small (below age X, where I forget what X is) for gunk to clear up without an infection setting in, or for an infection to clear up on its own. Of course take with all the standard, "I am not a pediatrician, even if I do play one at home" warnings.

Um, what is CalPol, in American? And is she running a fever?
