I'm concerned about the relearning curve ... I had hoped it was like riding a bicycle.

Somehow you did manage a long post in there though. Good to hear from you.

Anna H.

I know I don't actually *know*, but that first bit was one of the best descriptions of life with a newborn that I've ever read.

And this made me laugh:

"I lay there for while playing with my iphone contraction app."

Because, of course! Life in 2011/2 :)

Dr Spouse

I am currently living my life with the ibaby app for Android, as Baby Spouse is not always very good at letting us know when he's hungry.

It Is What It Is

Waiting for Part III.

Yay great to hear from you!
And bloody hell I had forgotten the details of how hard those first weeks were with my first and am way to chicken to try again (assuming it's even possible). I remember it being horrible, but the specifics have all blurred together in a mush of muddled memories. But I can tell you it sounds even worse with a 4-yr-old too. My boy (also 4) is pushing me to my limits all by himself. So I take my hat off to you.
And not just surviving, but posting too? Seriously impressed!
Loving hearing Colt's birth story. (& love his pseudonym).
Take care of yourself...
And best wishes for your head not exploding, or melting, with all the sleep deprivation & screaming (from any & all parties).
To quote Moxie, who you put me on to in my dark days 4 yrs ago (and I can't thank you enough for that), "This too shall pass". (unfortunately the good bits as well as the brain explodey ones).

Betty M

Glad you have time to blog in the newborn fog! And I love the idea of an iPhone contraction app. There really is an app for everything now.

thalia

It sounds just right. Chaotic family life, exhausting but things are right in the world. I do hope colt settles a bit, sounds like you are dealing with a lot of crying.

That newborn stuff does all sound vaguely familiar...

What is it with the 4 year olds and their constant need for you to get them what they are perfectly capable of getting for themselves? For every 1 actual need, they seem to come up with 15 unnecesary and ridiculous ones! Mom, can you put my socks on? I'm too tired. But I need socks so I can got outside to play.

Stephanie

Oh yeah. I remember those days. The "quick, he's asleep, go do dishes/laundry/dinner prep" days. Hopefully it will pass soon? IIRC, with my kids weeks 4-5 were the toughest, but then things gradually got better, and seemed much more manageable by 8-12 weeks.
Just out of curiosity, do you swaddle? A lot of folks don't these days, it seems....but our swaddle blankets saved.our.lives. My kids LIVED in theirs the first few months....and slept in them the whole first year.

One day last week we told Bug (almost 3) he had to be quiet for THREE SECONDS before he could have something.

It took FIVE MINUTES. For him to be quiet for THREE SECONDS. Bless their sweet, needy little hearts.

My little boy will be one next week, so those newborn days are not really that long ago for me. However, clearly enough time has passed to fog my memory as your description of life with a newborn actually makes me feel nostalgic and strangly broody!
Glad you are getting through it and will look forward to hearing more. How is breastfeeding going?

Sara

You're leaving us hanging AGAIN? How cruel! ;-)

I laughed out loud about Botany asking for 37 things in one hour (and you counting). Apparently I have the same four-year-old.

Jill

Aw, it all sounds so normal.

I hope you are also remembering the sweet smell of baby and the cuddling skin to skin.

Slim

I'm impressed that you can still count to 37, especially over the course of an hour.

Anne

I just read your twitter. You poor things. Could he be reacting to food in your milk? The big three are dairy, gluten and soy.
